How to Master a Cozy Minimalist Home

May 26, 2022

Clutter can be stressful. Although it can be hard to let go of material items, it’s easier to feel mentally organized when your physical environment is organized! With all of the chaos and craziness of the modern world, it’s no wonder that more and more people have been gravitating toward a minimalist living style—but your home should still be a place that feels comfortable and lived in.

It can be hard to balance minimalism with a particular aesthetic, especially if you’re not used to implementing it in your life. If you’re interested in having a cozy minimalist home, here are some tips to get started!

1. Use Multifunctional Pieces

If you want to embrace minimalism, it’s important to let go of unnecessary items. Sometimes, though, there are things we just need to have. This is where it can be useful to think of how some items can be used for multiple purposes.

For example, try adding a lamp with shelves, a chair that unfolds into a couch, or even a table that can flatten or expand how you need it to. Look at various pieces to find the ones that call to you—this will create a personal and “cozy” touch for your home!

2. Think About Light

Lighting is an important part of our living spaces that is easy to overlook. It affects not only the aesthetics of a room but can even change our mood or influence our mental health

With a minimalist space, you’ll likely want to try limiting your items, including artificial lights, so make sure to utilize sunlight to your advantage. Try setting up your workspace in an area that gets good light early in the day to keep you alert and motivated. Maybe set up a more comfortable area where there is less sunlight, but add some warm artificial lights to make it relaxing.

3. Play With Texture and Color

The textures and colors you use in your home will be one of the most important parts of curating a particular atmosphere. You might be unsure about how to make a space inviting and cozy without having as many personal items or knickknacks to help.

Playing with the textures and colors of your space is a great way to solve this! Lots of contrasting textures or bold colors can make your space seem busier and more “filled,” while something more simple or “flat” will make the room feel more plain and open.

4. Add Plants or Flowers

What do many “cozy” looking homes have in common? Plants! Adding real plants to your space is a great way to make your home feel inviting, lived in, and natural.

Maybe you want to cover every bare corner with plants, or maybe you just want a few potted flowers beside a window; either way, having plants in your home is another strategy you can use to personalize your space while keeping things simple and minimal.

5. Don’t Forget Personal Touches

Of course, no matter what, you’ll want your home to feel like home! Personal touches are essential if you want your space to feel unique, individualized, and cozy. Although you are trying to minimize the number of items in your space, it doesn’t mean you have to let go of everything. Include personal items and design choices to make your space feel like yours

6. Be Intentional About What You Buy

Even though embracing a minimalist aesthetic doesn’t mean you have to get rid of everything, you’ll likely want to limit your items. While you’re putting together your living space, and after everything is set up, try to stay in the habit of buying things with intention.

Buying things usually brings us short-lived joy, and then our stuff just starts to build up. Try getting in the habit of double-thinking purchases to make sure it is something you will actually use, and that will keep you happy months—or even years—down the line.

7. Keep Materials Consistent

When it comes down to it, there aren’t any hard and fast rules to interior design. Do what makes you happy! But if you want to make your home feel cohesive (if you want consistency in your design), do what you can to keep the materials of your items, furniture, or decorations consistent with each other.

If your couch and chair are completely different fabrics, or if you have a wooden table next to a plastic television stand, things might start to get chaotic. Even different types of wood can feel like they clash.

Wrap Up

Minimalism can be cozy! Some people think of minimalist styles as cold, bland, or uninviting, but there are small design choices you can make to ensure your home is as comfortable as ever while keeping away clutter. Consider the tips above as you create your own cozy minimalist home to get the best of both worlds.
